Tragic Fire in a Milan Retirement Home Claims Six Lives and Injures Dozens
Devastating fire broke out, in tragic event in a retirement home in Milan, resulting in the loss of six lives and leaving around 80 people injured, with three in critical condition, according to Italian authorities on Friday.
The fire originated in a room on the first floor of the facility, but thanks to a swift response from firefighters, it was quickly extinguished, preventing its spread to other parts of the building. However, the fire produced a substantial amount of toxic fumes, posing a significant threat to the residents.
Milan Mayor Giuseppe Sala addressed the media at the scene, revealing that two individuals tragically perished in their room due to burns, while four others succumbed to intoxication caused by the fumes.
The cause of the fire is currently under investigation, as stated by Luca Cari, a spokesperson for the firefighters. Although accidental causes are suspected, the authorities are conducting a thorough examination to determine the exact circumstances.
The incident unfolded shortly after 1 a.m. (2300 GMT) at the “Home of the Spouses” residential facility in Milan’s southeastern Corvetto neighborhood. Firefighters promptly evacuated approximately 80 individuals, including many who relied on wheelchairs for mobility. Additionally, approximately 80 more residents were transported to nearby hospitals for medical treatment, according to Nicola Miceli, the local firefighters’ chief, in an interview with RAI public television.
Miceli described the rescue operation as particularly challenging due to heavy smoke that severely impaired visibility. Moreover, the fact that many residents required assistance to stand further complicated the evacuation process.
Witnessing the scene, Lucia, a local resident, recounted the distressing sight of some residents struggling to breathe as they leaned out of their windows, using rags to shield themselves from the fumes. She commended the rescuers, describing their efforts as exceptional, as they provided aid to everyone affected. Those who were capable of walking were guided out, while those unable to do so were carefully transported using bed sheets.
The devastating fire at the Milan retirement home has resulted in profound loss and injury, leaving the community in mourning. Authorities are determined to determine the cause of the fire to prevent future tragedies and ensure the safety of residents in similar facilities.
